Frequently Asked Questions for OMT Specialists & Our Manual Physical Therapy Services

Why should I see a physical therapist?
  • You have a medical diagnosis, pain or other health-related condition(s) that limit your ability to move and perform functional tasks and/or sport activities in your daily life.
    • Common diagnoses include: neck pain, low-back pain, disc herniation, shoulder pain, rotator cuff tear, tennis elbow, wrist pain, hip pain, knee pain, ankle pain, plantar fasciitis, foot pain, TMJ, jaw pain.
  • You are recovering from surgery.
  • You are interested in preventing conditions associated with loss of mobility.
  • You want to reach the next level in your sport/activity by optimizing the way your body can move and function.
    • Common athletes who come to OMT Specialists, LLC, include: runners (from competitive high school athletes to age-group marathoners to weekend warriors), triathletes, soccer players, tennis players, golfers, rock climbers, and pool players.
What is orthopedic manual therapy and how is it different from other forms of physical therapy?
  • Orthopedic manual therapy is a clinical approach in which physical therapists apply highly skilled, hands-on therapeutic techniques to determine and diagnose the root cause of a patient’s pain, restriction, or loss of function. They then treat that cause to help enhance the body’s natural ability to self-heal, self-regulate, and maintain optimum health—ultimately allowing the patient to have the greatest potential for healing.
  • A combination of techniques is used since no single technique is right for every person in every situation, even if those patients have the same diagnosis.
    • Some examples of these techniques are: Muscle Energy Technique, joint mobilization/manipulation, craniosacral techniques, direct & indirect myofascial release, Strain/Counterstrain, Indirect Functional Technique.
  • This is different from standard physical therapy in that manual therapy requires 100% one-on-one therapist-to-patient time for an accurate diagnosis of the cause of the problematic symptom(s).
  • The site of pain is frequently believed to be the cause of the pain. Pain, however, is frequently deceptive. Take, for example, the following scenario:
    • There is a job that requires 100 workers to perform. 30 workers decide to go on vacation and not come back to work. Now, 70 workers are stuck doing the job meant for 100. Initially, those 70 can get the job done. But as time goes on, the 70 workers on the job start to complain. Now, there are several ways to address this situation: you could pay the 70 workers a little extra, maybe take them out to dinner or get them a massage, but the real way to solve the problem is to get the 30 workers back to work!
      • Much like the job gets done more efficiently if there are 100 workers instead of 70, your body feels significantly better if all of your muscles and joints are doing their part properly. Manual physical therapy can make this happen!
What makes OMT Specialists, LLC, unique?
  • The first step in starting a physical therapy plan begins with your first face-to-face interaction at the front desk. There, you will meet Sheri, the Office Manager. Sheri will become your go-to person for scheduling, discussing insurance questions, billing, and addressing any logistical issues that may arise. Sheri is truly one of the most knowledgeable, skilled, helpful, and friendly people you will come across. For more information, please read her bio on the Our Practice page.
  • The next person you’ll meet will be your physical therapist (PT). OMT Specialists, LLC, has one licensed physical therapist: Dr. J. Logan Cooper PT, DPT, OCS, CFMM, CSCS, SFMA, FMS, TPI. Dr. Cooper is board certified as a clinical specialist in orthopedics and teaches manual medicine at Michigan State University. For more information on Dr. Cooper, please read their bios on the Our Practice page.
  • At OMT Specialists, LLC, you will be 100% one-on-one with your physical therapist throughout each session. Unlike many traditional outpatient orthopedic physical therapy clinics, OMT Specialists, LLC, puts you in your own private treatment room without any fancy equipment – only you, your physical therapist, and a treatment table are required.
  • The design of our practices at OMT Specialists, LLC, allows your physical therapist to not only identify the cause of your pain, but also ask and answer the question “Why?”
    • Why have you rolled/sprained your ankle five times?
    • Why are your hamstrings so tight even though you have been stretching them for years?
    • Why do you wake up in the mornings with neck pain, jaw pain, and headaches when none of that was there when you went to bed?
    • Why is your low-back so stiff when you first get up from a chair or out of the car?
    • Why are your split times not improving on your runs/bikes/swims despite a consistent training plan and appropriate nutrition regimen?
  • A big part of your overall treatment plan is your home exercise program. A home exercise program (HEP) will be custom made to fit your needs and—unlike the stick figures or photocopies you may have received in the past from other clinics—the program you develop with your physical therapist will be e-mailed to you and will include a color photo, written description, and full video of your exercise(s). For an example of these videos, please see our Online Services page.
Do I need a prescription from my doctor for physical therapy?
  • The state of Maryland is a “direct access” state, meaning that you do not need a prescription from your doctor to see a physical therapist.
  • However, some insurance companies do require a physician order and/or referral. If you need help determining if your insurance policy requires a physician order and/or referral, please call our office and ask for Sheri.
Will my insurance cover my physical therapy treatment?
  • OMT Specialists, LLC, currently does not take any form of insurance other than Medicare.
  • We realize that this is often an area of significant confusion. If you have any questions regarding your level of insurance coverage for physical therapy, please call our office and ask for Sheri.
Will I work with the same physical therapist each of my sessions?
  • At OMT Specialists, LLC, we believe in continuity of care and building a trusted relationship, so you will always work with the same physical therapist.
  • All treatments are performed by licensed physical therapists; we do not employ assistants, aides, or technicians.
What do I need to bring to my first appointment?
  • When you speak with Sheri to schedule your initial evaluation, she will inform you about any specific forms you need to bring.
  • Please bring a comfortable change of clothes. Shorts and a tank top or sports bra are preferred to minimize any clothing barrier when making a diagnosis and providing treatment.
What will happen during my initial evaluation?
  • Please arrive 15 minutes early to complete any necessary paperwork before your appointment.
  • Initial evaluations typically take one hour. Please allow it to run several minutes over to ensure a thorough evaluation and to answer any questions you may have.
  • We start by getting a detailed history of your current condition/complaint along with all other pertinent past medical history information.
  • From there, the remaining physical therapy evaluation—including common, core assessments administered on everyone (such as an upper and lower extremity neurological screenings)—will be fairly dynamic and individualized.
  • Please arrive with an open mind due to the fact that your physical therapist is looking for the root cause of your symptoms/complaint/restriction, and the search for that may very well extend beyond the local area(s) of pain.
What happens during follow-up treatment sessions?
  • Follow-up appointments are approximately 40 minutes long.
  • As with the initial evaluation, the entire course of physical therapy treatment may have some commonalities from person to person but is generally fluid and dynamic based on the individual.
  • Continuing from the initial evaluation, manual physical therapy treatment may extend to areas of the body away from the primary area(s) of pain.
    • For example, it is very common for someone coming for treatment of his/her low-back pain to have his/her pelvis, hips, and entire lower extremities (legs) evaluated and treated accordingly.
  • Our licensed team of specialists will explain all treatment provided—along with the rationale behind it—so that you leave with not only a better feeling body, but also a better understanding of your body and its many connections/functions. You’ll also pick up a variety of health tips along the way!
